Black Brook - weir removal

Completed in October 2023, Calder Rivers Trust completed the removal of a stone weir on the Black Brook at Greetland, near Halifax. It is unknown when this weir was originally constructed but we do know that it has been impacting how the brook moves and its habitat.

This project was funded by Calder & Colne Rivers Trust and the Environment Agency.

Removing this weir has opened up 0.5km upstream and 1.5km downstream.

Benefits Achieved

  • Restored fish passage for all species

  • Improved habitat quality with reduced sediment and increased availability of gravels for fish spawning

  • Removal of artificial bankside walls to encourage natural river processes and reconnection to its floodplain
